Forgive me if this topic has been covered previously in this forum - this is my first post. I have a '71 280SL late (98 from end of production).
I've seen the extensive discussions about overhaul of the heating system by Ulli and others, but I cannot find a detailed discussion about problems with the upper right lever control to direct air up to the window or down to the feet.
My upper right lever was completely loose and freely moving when I discovered that the wire had become disconnected. I accessed the wire through the dash speaker opening and connected it to the castle nut on the lever assembly, but now the lever is stuck. The lever only has a limited range of motion (about halfway), and cannot travel the full span of the lever range of motion. I assume that the problem is in the flap in the heater distribution box under the dash.
Unfortunately, I have a Frigiking AC system under my dash, which I know will have to be moved aside to get to the heater distribution box. But, once I have access to the distribution box, what is the procedure to repair the connection to the upper right lever, please?
    Thanks for any help!

    Dear Gary,
    Welcome to the Pagodentreff Group.
As to your question, yes both cases can be.
First of all you could check again whether the smoke-grey lever (the upper right one) moves freely once you disconnect the wire completely again. I would guess, yes.
Most likely your problem is down in the heater distribution box under the dash. There are two flaps inside (one left, one to the right) which are both connected to each other and in the middle attached to this particular wire. At age the plastic of the flaps and the heater distribution box intself becomes a bit bent or misaligned so that the heat distribution flaps won't move or travel freely anymore all their way.
I would say nothing helps but removing the box from the car, washing it thoroughly (there is much of dirt inside ... :) the box...),
... and then try to move the flaps freely - alone (i.e. separately) or with the help of the wire. Mostly the system is self-explaining and you will see where it moves badly or not.
You can carefully bend the plastic back to shape how it is supposed to be correct. But plese be careful, the plastic tends to break ... after 50 years of usage. Try to push a piece of cardboard or so between the flap and the box, you can also warm up the section carefully, that helps....
until you can move the flaps freely in the distribution box again.
Then re-assembly the other way around.

    Good luck!

    Best,
    Achim

Thanks for the quick response, Achim! Is the access and removal of the box fairly obvious and straightforward? I think I'm a little intimidated by anything related to working on the heater because of the horror stories I've read ("the Pagoda was built around the heater") - but maybe that is related to removal of the lever assemblies and heater core? Any photos available of what I can expect to see after I move the AC unit?
    Thanks again!
